Space, the final frontier

Star Trek 2009

As a second-generation Trekkie and sci-fi lover - I am a bit partial to this movie. But I repeat, I am a 2nd generation star trek follower; as such I've only seen between 2-3 episodes of the original Captain James T. Kirk and Spoc containing Star Trek saga. Seeing as I will forever love Data's monotonous spoken philosophies & Captain Janeway's tough love though, I HAD to go see what this Star Trek movie was all about. Thinking that it would be a good movie but that most "good" movies end up disappointing me tremendously, I wondered how well the acclaimed J.J. Abrams could both stick with the basic essence of Star Trek, NOT make a sucky Star Trek movie and re-ignite the fire and passion for these characters and this series. We are introduced in the first scene to Captain Kirk's father being thrown into a life or death situation. What happens to him and the choices he makes is reflective of who James T. Kirk is to become and a part of him that will never change - the integrity and passion his father has. The film is the telling of the beginning ; who the crew is and the road that led them to know the U.S.S. Enterprise as their home. Watching Kirk and Spoc grow up and placed in opposing situations helps you appreciate the friendship they'll develop and the vastly different ways they conduct their decision making. I won't give too much though, as you must see the film; I demand it! As an experience, it is visually amazing. It is heart thumping, a delving back into star-trek-mania MANIA and may make you want to grow Spoc sideburns (or this is just me?). One negative thing that made me question the seriousness of the casting director was having Tyler Perry make an appearance in the film. While he wasn't horrible, he was so very unnecessary and rather than take his role seriously I couldn't help but stare at Madea's lips and wait for her give advice on how to keep your man in check. Despite this slight distraction, the film is a must-see. What’s up for the sequel – will we see other cameos from any cast members from Star Trek? Eeek! I’ll calm myself down and just wait to see what is to come!
