He can suck on my neck any time

Vampire Diaries
Channel: CW (check your local listings)
Day/Time: Thursdays at 8pm

Oh vampires, how we have long suffered for your mysterious beauty and youthful good looks. Going back to Dracula to Anne Rice novels all the way up to, yes, the Twilight phenomenon (throwing up a little in my mouth). Humans have had a fascination with vampires for centuries. This post isn’t going to be about the history of that. This post is going to examine one of the newest vampire shows to the boob tube, “The Vampire Diaries.”

I didn’t get into this show at first. But I caught up through some reruns and I was hooked. I’m not saying it’s the best acted or written show on television today. On the contrary, the dialogue can be quite cheesy at times. They do have some obvious plot lines as well. However, I have been pleasantly surprised with some of the twists and new characters that are brought in that are obviously vital to the story but you aren’t sure how yet. I like that they aren’t afraid to kill off people. Yes, I know, it’s a show about vampires so it stands to reason that people are going to die because one of them is going to bite them on the neck. It’s the choice of who dies that is pretty interesting. You would think you would keep around some of these people for at least a little longer.

I have to say that the vampires on this show are a HELL OF A LOT HOTTER than the ones in “Twilight.” Seriously people, what is sexy about an unwashed, grungy, dirty looking guy? He doesn’t even have a face where you could gaze into it and forgive him for not showering for half a century. Now Stefan and Damon (the two main male roles that are vampires) on the other hand are totally swoon worthy. They have the dark brooding good looks that you had with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in “Interview with a Vampire.” They make you want to stare at them all day and if they ask to nibble on your neck you gladly oblige and ask them to be gentle. Those two have the heated, bitter brotherly relationship that everyone wants to see because it gives you the bad guy (Damon) and the sweet, sensitive one (Stefan).

The female leads are pretty good too. They have a former “Degrassi”-ite as the lead, Elena. She is good. Very well acted sweetie. I like the character too. She’s got a hard time at home with her parents newly dead and now she falls for the new hottie in town, Stefan, who seems to only have eyes for her. Eventually we are led down the path to find out more about her and why she is so connected to Stefan but they didn’t make it that easy. I have to say I was a little surprised by the most recent wrench in the system that was in the latest episode. The other girls that are Elena’s friends are interesting as well. We have a witch, Bonnie, and a seemingly ditzy blonde, Caroline. We also find out that there is more to them than once meets the eye. Bonnie is also well played. Her character must have it hard realizing that it’s all on her to release some very important people that just happen to be vampires that have been trapped for centuries. I know that sounds confusing, but you need to watch the show to fully get it. And Caroline really isn’t just some ditzy blonde. I feel for the girl. She really just wants to be liked by everyone, especially by her mother, and she does whatever to make that happen. I’m waiting for the girl to have the realization that she is wonderful just being her.

I do realize that I haven’t really explained the whole plot of the show except that it’s about beautiful vampires and non-vampires who have intertwining lives. I know I normally do. But I think I’m going to leave this up to you guys to go back and watch it. It’s really worth it to watch this one from the beginning. I know they have full episodes up at www.cwtv.com. I’m sure you can youtube it also to find the episodes. Do it, you’ll thank me later. I’m eager to see what else is going to develop on this show. I hope that Stefan and Elena can make it work and that we finally figure out if those old, trapped below a church vampires are really still alive and if they are going to get out. And who the hell is this weird guy who got hit by the car? So many questions for just one episode a week!

I'm giving this show and their incredibly hot vampires 4 1/5 frames

2009 Best & Worst Continues!

Some interesting movie choices for 2009 have graced these pages. Most worthwhile, a few, quite unpleasant. Part II is just as juicy as the first; 2009 wasn't a bust after all!

The Best (Part II):

Fantastic Mr. Fox
Comical, of the quirky sort, and pleasingly endearing.

Up
(Check out the review; it was one of my first!!!!)

Precious
So rough around the edges you cannot avoid feeling for the characters. Real, painful, terrifying. You must watch this film both to be aware of the truths of many individuals and to appreciate the strength of those who can thrive in such a reality.

The Princess and the Frog
See my review........ an absolutely adorable film.

Zombieland
You must add this to your zombie collection!!

Ahhhhh, those were my top picks of 2009 - if you beg to differ, shoot me an email or post on the blog.

More Honorable Mentions:

Inglorious Basterds
Up for a few Golden Globe awards, Tarantino's own twist to WWII's operations was superbly written and distinctly acted.

Taken
Revenge that is completely understandable.

Coraline
Now that I'm posting this, I'm hoping I won't regret not putting this in my top 9. Clever and dark; quality work.

And FAILURES, Part Duos:

Transformers; Revenge of the Fallen
How can your execution be so awful when the first one succeeded as a decent story and as a credible, Transformers tale?

Dragonball Evolution
Just look at the dvd cover.. enough said.

I hope you, as I, look forward to what pleasures (and terrors) 2010 shall bring.

TEAM COCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I'm sure by now everyone has heard about the whole Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien fiasco. Here's a little background. Way back Leno announced he'd be retiring in 2009 and he named Conan as his Tonight Show successor. Well the time finally came and Jimmy Fallon took over Late Night, and Conan was to start in June. Well, next thing you know NBC announces that Jay Leno will have his own show at 10pm five nights a week. Essentially starting the late night shows during prime time. That started in September I believe. Conan did well for those first few months. Yes there was some adjustment but his ratings weren't bad. Same for Leno when he started his 10pm show. But as time went on his ratings started to slip and it then started to drag down Conan's ratings.

Here recently we heard that NBC was offering Leno a half hour show at 11:35pm and offered Conan to push back the Tonight Show to 12:05am. Eventually Leno agreed to do the later show and it would be starting after the winter Olympics. That left the biggest decision on Conan. There were rumors floating around that other networks were courting him to do a late night show for them. They have proven to just be rumors. Now, this past Tuesday (January 12th) Conan released a statement saying that he won't push back the show to 12:05am. He listed off a number of reasons which make complete sense. Just one being that it wasn't fair to him and it wasn't fair to Jimmy Fallon who took over for him on Late Night. Here is a link to the letter Conan put out. http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-says-he-wont-do-tonight-show-following-leno/

Now don't get me wrong. I love Jay Leno. And when the time came for his retirement I was upset at the thought of losing Jaywalking and Headlines. I was also upset about how I was sure Conan's humor would have to be modified for an earlier time slot. In the end though I was very happy with Conan as the Tonight Show host. He was still his same self just without a masturbating bear. I also thought that Leno at 10pm was good. True it wasn't the same as when he was at 11:35pm but he was still funny and still had all of the same qualities as before.

What is happening to Conan now though is just ridiculous. NBC should have known that a show like Leno's would never make it at 10pm when up against other networks' high ratings dramas. They should have also known that you can't have that at 10pm and expect people to tune in to three other shows that are just like it. Well, Carson Daly's show isn't really like a talk show anymore but still the same basic principle. You also can't expect that after only 6 months or so that Conan will have completely reached his full potential as the Tonight Show host. Give the man a chance people!

And Leno, I love you and I would be happy to have you around some more to make me laugh but not at the expense of Conan. You made the decision five years ago to retire at the end of your contract and move on and give the show to Conan. So do that! I think that when NBC approached you with moving to 11:35pm you should have humbly declined and stepped aside so Conan could continue on.

I don't think anyone can blame Conan for his decision. And hopefully NBC will come to its senses or he will get an even better offer from another network. Conan is hilarious and he deserves to stay on the air. For now, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this turns out. If you want to join Team Conan go here http://teamconan.com/

I believe this video from the January 12th show explains the situation pretty well.

Until next time kids, this has been Hava!

Year End Madness!

2009 brought us the good, the bad, and the extremely ugly. Arriving peacefully and with all limbs into 2010, it's time to look back on the happenings of this past year in a two-parter (hide the excitement people!). This is purely opinion (and we all know my opinion is gold) so all may not agree but here are some of my favorites, memorable by quantity of bloodshed, quality of writing etc... ;)

The Best:

Drag Me to Hell
(see my review from earlier this year!)

Monsters vs. Aliens
Surprisingly quick-witted and adorable...

District 9
See review from earlier this year, scroll baby, scroll!

Zombieland
(you know the deal by now, reviewed this ;p)

Star Trek
This is worth buying, highly recommended!

Honorable Mentions
This list consists of movies either loved by me or raved about by the masses. I think these are solid films, just didn't quite make the top 9 cut.

Pandorum
For us sci-fi-ers, a must see of 2009.

The Hangover
Not for the sensitive, this somewhat linguistically crude film had an absurdity you couldn't help but giggle at.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
A solid addition to the Potter collection. Not quite memorable enough for me but enjoyable nonetheless.

Watchmen
Many had their qualms about the nuances compared to the comic while others thought it boring. I would dare say it barely missed the top 9 - it was an intriguing story with layered characters. Had I been a fan prior to the release; this may have been the cat's meow.

I'll leave you with a couple films that are the antithesis of good. I only have one things to say about them: "Fail."

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
I had hope, just a bit, so why.....

Tell me what your picks of the best and worst movies of 2009 on the forum.
